TheScore Bet key to PENN Entertainment’s Canadian success story
The U.S.-based operator confirms Canada is going to be its “strongest margin market in North America” thanks to its Ontario-born and based subsidiary. Also, there's more bad news at Rivalry.
Given its drama in the U.S. over failed partnerships with both Barstool Sports and ESPN, PENN Entertainment has long seemed to have fared better in Canada thanks to the success of its Ontario-born, Toronto-based subsidiary theScore Bet. Now PENN’s CEO has confirmed that Canada is one of the company’s most successful markets.
During last week’s Q1 earnings call, Jay Snowden indicated Canada is going to be PENN’s, “strongest margin market in North America, driven by volume and market share and by tax rate, and the fact that you have iCasino and [online sports betting]. Canada for us is market number one from a margin and profitability perspective.”
In his Straight to the Point newsletter on Monday, Steve Ruddock said that’s mostly thanks to the performance of theScore Bet in Canada.
“In Ontario, theScore is one of the top operators,” Ruddock wrote. “Penn has called Ontario its #1 market, where it possesses around a 10% market share (per estimates), in a province that has 16 million residents, larger than any U.S. online casino state.”
From the report:
PENN’s optimism about Canada is also due to the promise of Alberta, which, like Ontario, will have legal online casinos – the real money-maker – and a fair tax rate. Also, Alberta is a strong market for theScore’s original sports media product. It should be noted that, a year ago, theScore laid off about half of its editorial staff, including 75 people based in Toronto. That, and other business decisions by Snowden and PENN leadership, drew the ire of theScore founder John Levy when he appeared on the GNCS last November.
“In Alberta, we feel really good about our launch,” Aaron LaBerge, PENN’s chief technology officer, said on the earnings call. “TheScore brand in Canada is very strong — it is the number one media sports brand in market. We have as many people on theScore in Alberta as we do in Ontario, so it is very strong.
“We have a full-scale marketing plan that starts in July. The date is no longer moving around — it is July 13. We will have a full-scale launch then. We are already in market with preregistration. We will be active from a brand and performance marketing perspective.”
Ditching both Barstool and ESPN to focus on theScore brand for its U.S. online sports betting platform – it has a separate Hollywood Casino branded app south of the border – is also paying dividends for PENN, wrote Dustin Gouker in his The Closing Line newsletter.
“[Last] Thursday marked Penn Entertainment’s first full quarterly earnings report after moving on from ESPN Bet to theScore Bet brand in the U.S. late last year,” Gouker wrote. “The market liked what it heard — both on the retail and online businesses — as Penn stock was up 15 per cent intraday.”
Also, PENN’s focus on states that have both sports betting and online casinos – using the former to funnel to the latter – is also showing promise for the company.
Ruddock wrote, “As Citizens said in an investor note following [PENN’s earnings] call, ‘We commend PENN’s focus on investing in Canada and U.S. states with both iGaming and sports, while letting the large operators fight for share in the sports betting-only states. The strategy closely mirrors Rush Street and Caesars, which are in the middle innings of highlighting that investing in core, higher-quality customers will allow for long-term EBITDA growth.”
Through it all, Canada is increasingly a prime market for PENN.
“We are doing more of the right things, and we expect to deliver market share results in Alberta that look very similar to what we have generated in Ontario, where we continue to have momentum,” Snowden said on the call. “Our story may be a bit unique in that Canada is really driving a lot of our results.”
Speaking of Snowden, Matthew Waters of Front Office Sports reported Monday that the PENN boss will have his compensation trimmed by 31% in 2026 at the request of shareholders.

Rivalry continues to flounder with more front-office departures
Meanwhile, another Toronto-based online gambling operator is floundering.
Rivalry, which ceased operations in Ontario in February, is down to just one executive – founder and CEO Steven Salz – after last week’s announcement of a mass exodus of five other executives.
Salz’s co-founders Steven Isenberg, Ryan White and Kevin Wimer have departed Rivalry, as well, as board fellow board member Stephen Rigby and chief financial officer Demi Abidogun-Benson. A press release indicated the board and management changes are part of Rivalry’s “ongoing operational transition.”
ICYMI, the company announced in February a “significant reduction in operating activity”, including pausing player activity and beginning the process of player withdrawals.
Alberta’s move to a regulated iGaming model on the 13th July of this year represents a significant step forward for Canada’s digital gaming market, setting clear expectations for robust identity verification, fraud prevention and compliance from day one.

Bede Gaming expands Ontario business with PointsBet Canada partnership
Three weeks after announcing the launch of an updated app through an existing partnership with OLG, the august sponsors of this corner have landed another Ontario dance partner.
This morning, whilst we were waiting for our coffee to finish brewing, word landed that Bede Gaming is giving a helping hand to PointsBet Canada for its new casino aggregation and bonusing platform. From the news release:
The new solution through Bede Gaming has now been successfully launched into the live PointsBet Canada player environment, enabling an expansive library of new, engaging content for its users. The open-API aggregation platform notably provides the operator with access to a robust casino catalogue that includes Games Global, Pragmatic Play, Play’n GO, Light & Wonder, and others.
This partnership will strengthen PointsBet Canada’s casino strategy by enabling more competitive player acquisition and improved long-term retention through an enhanced user experience. Bede’s comprehensive content catalogue and engagement toolkit offer greater configurability and flexibility in promotion management, advanced campaign workflows, and automated player lifecycle segmentation.
Bede will also deliver operational stability and efficiency through proven support processes, a reliable infrastructure with 99.99% uptime, and 24/7 monitoring from its Network Operations Centre.
The multi-year agreement includes a “shared roadmap for future provincial launches, including Alberta, as new regulated markets emerge in Canada”.
“We are thrilled to partner with the PointsBet Canada team, and eager to support their ambitious goals in Canada,” said Bede CEO Colin Cole-Johnson. “Our partnership model means that we mobilize to support the strategies of our customers, and we’re thrilled to already be demonstrating this through the successful launch of this new casino solution.
“Bede remains committed to providing stable, secure and pioneering technical solutions to the North American regulated gaming markets.”
From PointsBet Canada boss Scott Vanderwel: “Our strategy emphasizes delivering outstanding digital content that creates exceptional player engagement. I’m excited by the innovative tools we now have available with Bede. This partnership positions us strongly in Ontario and prepares us for future growth across additional Canadian markets.”
Canadian Lottery Coalition appoints Molly Cormier as its new executive director
The Canadian Lottery Coalition (CLC) has announced the appointment of Molly Cormier as its executive director. Cormier comes to the CLC from the Atlantic Lottery. She has, “extensive experience in public relations, marketing, and policy engagement within Canada’s regulated gaming sector,” has worked for the New Brunswick government and is also a former journalist.
“Molly brings the experience, leadership and judgment the Coalition needs as governments and regulators confront growing challenges around gambling advertising and consumer protection,” said Dallas McCready, president and CEO of the Atlantic Lottery and a member of the CLC executive board. “She understands the urgency of supporting player health, especially in the face of clear gaps in federal law and enforcement.”
The CLC is a pan-Canadian alliance of provincial lottery corporations – Atlantic Lottery, Loto-Québec, Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries, and British Columbia Lottery Corporation – that hold the authority to manage and operate gambling in their respective provinces. The coalition had been operating without an executive director since last fall when Will Hill decided against renewing his contract.
“I am pleased to join the Coalition at a time when the need for clear, coordinated national policy to protect player health, especially among young Canadians, has never been greater,” said Cormier. “My priorities will be to address gaps in federal legislation and regulation related to the promotion and advertising of online gambling, particularly sports betting; respond to the continued proliferation of illegal online gambling websites in Canada; and strengthen collaboration with governments, regulators and industry stakeholders. Canadians should be able to clearly distinguish between legal, accountable gambling options and offshore sites that operate outside Canadian and provincial laws and public safeguards.”
Cormier made her first “public appearance” on the CBC Cross-Country Checkup program Sunday when she joined Canadian Gaming Association president/CEO Paul Burns and Campaign to Ban Gambling Ads chair Bruce Kidd for a segment with host Ian Hanomansing on the debate about sports betting advertising.
Trump doesn’t like prediction markets?
One should always take what U.S. president Donald Trump says with a big heap of good old Canadian-based Windsor Salt. But, it’s interesting to note that Trump said last week he’s not a fan of prediction markets.
“The world, unfortunately, has become somewhat of a casino,” Trump said. “You look at what’s going on all over the world, in Europe, and every place, they’re doing these betting things. I was never much in favor of it. I don’t like it, conceptually. But it is what it is… I’m not happy with any of that stuff. But they have all these different sites. They have predictive markets. It’s a crazy world. It’s a much different world than it was.”
His comments came after a U.S. soldier was indicted for allegedly using inside information to cash some $400,000 in trades on Polymarket around the timing of the U.S. military’s capture of former Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro.
Considering there have been accusations that those close to the Trump administration have profited from what is, in effect, insider trading on the timing of the president’s announcements, the president’s words could be a sign he wants to rein in prediction markets.
Last Friday, the day after the soldier’s indictment, Michael Selig, the chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission told Front Office Sports, “It’s certainly the case that we need to put rules and regulations around these markets… We can’t have them be the Wild West. That’s why we’re taking action. That’s why we’re moving quickly to make sure there’s guardrails.”
Still, Selig did stress to Front Office Sports that “it’s not the government’s role to decide what Americans can trade, only to regulate those markets.”
