The hoopla in advance of last week’s launch of ESPN Bets was well-founded, as the Worldwide Leader’s sportsbook – in collaboration with Penn Entertainment – was No. 1 in app downloads including more than 670,000 in the first 24 hours.
SBC Americas journalist Jessica Welman made her return to the Gaming News Canada Show presented by Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP to speak about the reaction to ESPN Bet’s debut in 17 U.S. states. She also provided some insight into the latest happenings around the push for legal sports betting in California, Texas, Florida and North Carolina.
A panel on the final day of the PrimeTime Sports Management Conference & Trade Show included an at-times tense exchange with long-time NHL executive Brian Burke and University of Oregon sports management consultant Mark Francis. Canadian Gaming Association senior advisor Amanda Brewer and PointsBet Canada CCO Nic Sulsky, who were joined on the panel by BetMGM VP Scott Woodgate, provided some additional thoughts on the conversation with Burke and Francis. They also teed up next month’s Promoting Player Health and Wellbeing symposium being organized by the CGA.
Gray also lent his experience and expertise to discussion around the steps taken by the sports betting and gaming industry to not allow minors to gamble, and the protocols in place when it comes to athletes accessing sportsbook accounts. The former Sports Interaction head of trading operations also offered some advice around the 110th Grey Cup between the Montreal Alouettes and Winnipeg Blue Bombers (and he was right).
